A Broken Body is not a Broken Person
Janine Shepherd, AM, is an inspiring author, speaker, and aerobatic pilot whose extraordinary life story has touched millions around the world. Her powerful TEDx talk, “A Broken Body Is Not a Broken Person”, has garnered over 2 million views and continues to inspire audiences worldwide.
Janine’s remarkable journey began as an Australian national champion skier preparing for the Olympics. In a tragic accident, she was struck by a truck while cycling, suffering multiple life-threatening injuries. Doctors warned that, even if she survived, she would never walk again. After extensive spinal surgery and five months in the hospital, Janine faced a long and uncertain road to recovery.
Determined not to be defined by her disabilities, Janine found her defiant spirit when a plane flew overhead during her rehabilitation. She declared, “If I can’t walk, I’ll fly!” She went on to become a commercial pilot, aerobatic flight instructor, and author of six best-selling books, including her memoir, Defiant, which details her journey from athlete to spinal cord patient to soaring aerobatic pilot.
Janine’s life story is so compelling it was made into a feature film. Alongside her professional accomplishments, she raised three children and earned a university degree.
In recognition of her courage and achievements, Janine has been featured on 60 Minutes, This Is Your Life, and honored with The Order of Australia, the nation’s highest honor.
