Key Dallas Cowboys' Player in the 1980s Golden Era Danny White Key Dallas Cowboys' Player in the 1980s Golden Era Danny White was born February 9, 1952 in Mesa, Arizona. A graduate of Mesa Westwood High School, White had a stellar career as a Quarterback and Punter at Arizona State University where he was an All-American in 1973. Throughout his career as a player at Arizona State University, White set seven NCAA passing records. In 1973 his passing and running placed him second in the Nation in total offense. Sports Illustrated named White as the second-highest rated Quarterback of all time behind only Steve Young. The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame honored White in 1997 as the first player inductee ever from ASU and the State of Arizona. After 2 years with the Memphis Southmen of the World Football League, White joined the Dallas Cowboys and the NFL. White’s leadership skills as a Quarterback were evident when he broke the Dallas Cowboys single-season passing record (29 TD’s) in his first year as a starter (1980). The Cowboys went to the playoffs 5 times and won the NFC East title three times in White’s 6 years as a starter. He ended his career as the Cowboys most accurate passer, setting team single-season records for completions (334) and touchdown passes (29). He still holds 8 Cowboys records and holds the record for the most TD passes thrown in Texas Stadium. Tom Landry, the legendary Head Coach of the Cowboys said,”Danny White was probably as fine a winner as we have had in football”. After retiring as a player, White, a living legend of football in Arizona, served as the first Head Coach and General Manager of the Arizona Rattlers until 2004. In 13 seasons White led the Rattlers to Arena Bowl berths in 1994, 1997, 2002, 2003, and 2004 emerging as Arena Bowl Champions in 1994 and 1997. White finished his career with the Rattlers with an overall record of 141-65 and became an inductee into the Arena Football Hall of Fame in 2002. In addition to the AFL Hall of Fame and the NCAA Hall of Fame, White has been inducted into the Mesa Arizona Sports Hall of Fame, the State of Arizona Sports Hall of Fame and the Arizona State University Hall of Fame where his jersey number 11 was retired. White was also named the Arizona Athlete of the Century by the Arizona Republic in 2000. After retiring from the game, White provided analyst commentary for the Fox Sports Pac-10 Game of the Week and traveled around the country as an inspirational public speaker. He currently is the analyst for Compass Media broadcasting all Dallas Cowboy games over their national syndicated network. • Jim Craig

“Miracle on Ice” Olympic Gold Medalist Hockey Goalie Jim Craig “Miracle on Ice” Olympic Gold Medalist Hockey Goalie Jim Craig (born May 31, 1957, North Easton, Massachusetts) is an American ice hockey goaltender best known for his role in the historic 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. As a member of the U.S. hockey team, Craig helped lead the Americans to an unexpected gold medal victory in what became known as the "Miracle on Ice." The victory remains one of the most stunning upsets in Olympic history, with Craig, who started every game in goal, playing a pivotal role in the team’s success. At the start of the Olympics, the U.S. team was ranked 7th out of 12, while the Soviet Union, widely considered the best team in the world, were the overwhelming favorites. The Soviets had dominated international hockey, defeating an NHL All-Star team the previous year and thrashing the Americans 10–3 in an exhibition just days before the tournament. Between 1956 and 1992, the Soviet Union had an iron grip on the Olympic gold medal, with only the American teams of 1960 and 1980 breaking that dominance when the Winter Games were held in the U.S. Before joining the U.S. national team, Craig was an All-American goaltender at Boston University. Throughout the 1980 Olympic tournament, he played nearly every minute of every game. Craig helped the U.S. team pull off a series of surprising victories, often conceding an early goal but then shutting down opponents in the final period. In the semifinals, the Americans faced the Soviet Union, where Craig made 39 saves and weathered a relentless barrage of shots in the closing minutes. The U.S. defeated the Soviets 4–3 and went on to beat Finland 4–2 in the gold medal game. One of the most enduring images of the 1980 Games is Craig, draped in the American flag, searching the stands for his widowed father to share the victorious moment. BOOKS Gold Medal Strategies

  • Jerry Rice

NFL All-Time Leading Receiver San Fransisco 49ers and NFL Hall of Famer Jerry Rice NFL All-Time Leading Receiver San Fransisco 49ers and NFL Hall of Famer The San Francisco 49ers used their first-round draft pick in 1985 on wide receiver Jerry Rice from little known Mississippi Valley State. It did not take long for that decision to pay huge dividends. Rice gave a glimpse of what was to come when he averaged 18.9 yards per catch on 49 receptions for 927 yards and 3 TDs as a rookie. He also rushed six times and scored one touchdown on the ground. In 1986, Rice recorded a season that began perhaps the finest stretch by any receiver in NFL history. That year, he caught 86 passes for a league-leading 1,570 yards. He also led the NFL in touchdown catches with 15. It marked the first of 11 straight 1,000-yard seasons for Rice who also recorded double-digit receiving touchdown totals in nine of the next 10 seasons. The following year, Rice set the NFL record for touchdown receptions in a season with 22. His first of four seasons with 100 catches came in 1990 when he had an even 100 receptions to lead the NFL in that category. It marked the first of two receiving titles for Rice. He led the NFL in receiving yards six times including an NFL record 1,848 yards in 1995. Rice also led the NFL in touchdown receptions six times. No wide receiver in NFL history played more than Rice’s 20 seasons. By the time he retired after finishing his career with Oakland and Seattle, he was the most prolific wide receiver in NFL history with staggering career totals. He owns virtually every significant receiving mark. Some of the more notable career records include receptions (1,549); receiving yards (22,895 yards); most 1,000-yard receiving seasons (14); total touchdowns (208); and combined net yards (23,546). Rice has a hold on multiple NFL playoff and Super Bowl records. He played in eight conference championships and four Super Bowls. He earned three Super Bowl rings with the 49ers and was named the Most Valuable Player of San Francisco’s Super Bowl XXIII win over the Cincinnati Bengals. Rice, who was named first-team All-Pro 11 consecutive seasons and voted to 13 Pro Bowls, is also a member of the NFL’s All-Decade Teams of the 1980s and 1990s and NFL’s 75th Anniversary Team.
