  • Dan Jansen

American Speedskater, 1994 Winter Olympics Gold Medalist Dan Jansen American Speedskater, 1994 Winter Olympics Gold Medalist Dan Jansen is an iconic figure in the world of speed skating, known not only for his incredible athleticism but also for his resilience and determination in the face of adversity. By the time of the 1994 Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer, Jansen had already established himself as one of the sport's greatest competitors, with seven overall World Cup titles and seven world records to his name. However, his Olympic journey had been marked by heartbreak and disappointment. Jansen’s first Olympic appearance came in 1984, where he finished a heartbreaking fourth place in the 500m. He returned in 1988 as one of the favorites, but tragedy struck on the morning of the 500m event when his sister, Jane, passed away from leukemia. Despite the personal loss, Jansen attempted to race but fell in both the 500m and the 1,000m, leaving him empty-handed. In 1992, Jansen once again entered the Olympics as a favorite, but despite his skill, he could do no better than fourth place in the 500m and 26th in the 1,000m, further deepening his Olympic frustration. As he entered the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Jansen was the overwhelming favorite in the 500m event. However, in a cruel twist of fate, he slipped during his race and finished eighth, yet again falling short of an Olympic medal. At that point, Jansen had competed in seven Olympic events over the span of a decade without securing a single medal. But Jansen's story was far from over. His final chance for Olympic glory came in the 1,000m event, where six of his opponents had better times. Despite the odds, Jansen skated with remarkable focus and determination. He was on world-record pace when he stumbled during the penultimate turn. With incredible composure, he steadied himself and surged forward, ultimately crossing the finish line in 1:12.43, setting a new world record and winning his first-ever Olympic gold medal. Jansen’s triumph in Lillehammer was not just a victory in speed skating but a testament to the power of perseverance, turning years of heartbreak into an unforgettable moment of redemption.

He finished his collegiate career with 83 catches for 1,536 yards and four touchdowns, including an 83-yarder. The University of Wyoming record holder in the decathlon and pole vault, Novacek won the Western Athletic Conference championship in the decathlon in 1984. He also competed in the decathlon at the 1984 US Olympic Trials. In 1985 Novacek was a sixth-round draft pick by the Cardinals and played mainly on special teams as a rookie. During that time, he made five consecutive trips to the Pro Bowl, the only tight end in club history to achieve that, and in 1993 was named Tight End of the Year by the NFL Alumni Association. Jay ended his career with four 100-yard receiving games as a Cowboy. His reliable hands also served Dallas kickers well as the holder for field goals and extra points. • Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez

Legendary Hall of Fame Catcher, World Series Champion, Entrepreneur and Author Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez Legendary Hall of Fame Catcher, World Series Champion, Entrepreneur and Author Iván Rodríguez, widely regarded as one of the greatest catchers in MLB history, boasts a staggering 14 All-Star Game selections and 13 Gold Glove Awards, both records for any catcher. But perhaps the most telling statistic of his greatness is his 2,427 games behind the plate—the most by any catcher in major league history, and few have done it with such excellence. Born on November 27, 1971, in Manatí, Puerto Rico, Rodríguez honed his skills in the baseball-obsessed culture of his homeland before signing with the Texas Rangers as a free agent at just 16. By 1991, he was already considered one of the top catching prospects in the game, known for his legendary arm. He made his MLB debut with the Rangers on June 20, 1991, finishing fourth in the Rookie of the Year voting and quickly solidifying his reputation as an elite defensive catcher. In 1992, Rodríguez won his first Gold Glove Award and made his first All-Star Game appearance, beginning a dominant career behind the plate. Offensively, he soon blossomed as well, achieving eight consecutive seasons batting over .300 starting in 1995, while also adding power to his game. In 1999, Rodríguez won the American League MVP after a career year—hitting .332 with 35 homers, 113 RBIs, and 25 stolen bases. He became just the eighth catcher in history to record 100 runs and 100 RBIs in a season. Rodríguez's career took another turn in 2003, when he joined the Florida Marlins for a one-year stint, hitting .297 with 16 home runs and 85 RBIs, leading the Marlins to the postseason. He was named NLCS MVP and helped propel the team to a World Series title. Afterward, he signed with the Detroit Tigers, bringing veteran leadership to a rebuilding team, and in 2004, he led them to a 29-game improvement, winning his seventh and final Silver Slugger Award. In 2006, Rodríguez led the Tigers to the World Series. He spent his final seasons with the Yankees, Rangers, Astros, and Nationals, retiring after the 2011 season with 2,844 hits—the most by any player with at least 50% of their games played as a catcher. Over his 21-season career, he finished with a .296 batting average, 311 home runs, 572 doubles, and 1,354 runs (the most ever by a catcher), along with 1,332 RBIs. In 2017, Rodríguez was elected to the Hall of Fame, solidifying his legacy as one of the greatest players in baseball history. Hispanic BOOKS They Call Me Pudge: My Life Playing the Game I Love
